VP Leni to Cebu Youth: ‘Resist deceit with your right to dissent’
CEBU CITY. “The success of our democracy—and the state of our rights and freedoms—will depend on how we protect the truth,” - Vice President Lenio Robredo in INCITEGov's forum on Misinformation in Social Media
Vice President Leni Robredo, together with other notable speakers, engaged hundreds of youth leaders and students in a forum entitled Misinformation in Social Media held in Cebu. The forum, organized by the International Center for Innovation, Transformation, and Excellence in Governance (INCITEGov), Bato-Balani Foundation, Inc. (BBFI), Coalition for Better Education (CBE), and Young Public Servants (YPS), aimed to educate the youth on responsible consumption of information in the age of social media and the proliferation of fake news.
According to VP Leni, misinformation in social media is a serious problem being used to silence the truth, obfuscate relevant issues, and deceive the public. Addressing the Cebu youth, Leni said, “When deceit is forced upon you, resist it with your right to dissent.”
Leni also called the attendees to gather "an army of truth seekers" to start a campaign against lies and alternative facts.
“ Shall we surrender the truth to those who want to corrupt it? Of course, my answer is we must not,” VP Leni said.
